Homework: Getting Started for Students
Getting in a routine is very important, and it will save you a lot of time. Having a routine is also a great way to help you get started.
Pick a Backpack “Landing Zone”:
Pick a spot in your home where you put your backpack every time you walk into your house.
- You will always be able to find your backpack at the Landing Zone.
- Return your backpack to the Landing Zone after homework is completed, so it is where you need it to be for school each morning.
- You can also put other things at the Landing Zone that you need to remember to bring to school, like gym clothes or a poster board.
Before Starting:
- Good Ideas: Eat a healthy snack; exercise; play with a pet outdoors; take a walk.
- Bad Ideas: Eat a sugary snack; play a video game; eat some chips or drink soda; watch television.
Create A Study Center:
Think about the best place in your house to study. Here are some tips:
- It should be comfortable…but not too comfortable. Laying on your bed for studying is NOT recommended. (Sitting upright in a chair that is similar to a school chair is the top choice of ‘Homework Experts’).
- You should have some fresh air – don’t study in your closet or a stuffy area of your home.
- It should be quiet. You shouldn’t be able to hear the television or video games from your study area.
- It should be well lit.
- You shouldn’t have a lot of distractions. If you’re studying at the kitchen table and you have brothers and sisters coming in and out of the house, the phone ringing, and someone cooking dinner…..that’s too distracting.
- You should try to use the same place all of the time.
- Store your SmartHomework™ Caddy nearby.
- Put any awards or trophies that you have on the walls near your Study Center.
- Remind yourself that you are a Great Learner! You Can Do It! You Are Smart!
